Fast triage: control type (thermostat, programmer, receiver, Evohome), what works (hot water or heating), any flashing lights or “offline” messages, and whether the boiler is showing a fault code.
Smell gas? Do not touch anything. Do not use switches. Open windows, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Line: 0800 111 999.
Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone out immediately and call 999. Learn more about carbon monoxide safety.
No gas smell, no alarm? If the boiler is not firing, it may be a controls, power, pressure, or system issue. Try the quick checks below.

These take 60 seconds and fix a surprising number of “no heating” problems:
These symptoms are often linked to Honeywell thermostats, programmers, receivers (wireless) or motorised valves. If you can tell us what works and what doesn’t, we can usually triage quickly.
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Heating not coming on, hot water works | Heating channel off, thermostat not calling, receiver issue, zone valve issue | Turn heating “On” temporarily, raise thermostat, check pressure, then call if unchanged. |
| Hot water not coming on, heating works | Hot water channel off, cylinder stat issue, zone valve issue | Confirm hot water is scheduled and “On”, then call if unchanged. |
| Neither heating nor hot water | Power supply, boiler fault, programmer failure | Check fused spur and consumer unit. If power is on, check boiler display and call. |
| Thermostat shows “offline” or not responding | Wireless pairing/receiver issue, low batteries, interference | Replace batteries if applicable and check receiver power. Call for safe diagnosis. |
| Heating stuck on | Stuck zone valve, wiring fault, relay sticking | Do not isolate wiring yourself. Book an engineer for safe testing. |
| Radiators warm in hot water mode | Zone valve not fully closing, diverter or valve control issue | Book a diagnosis, it is usually a valve or control fault. |
| Boiler not firing but thermostat is calling for heat | Low pressure, boiler lockout, receiver relay fault, valve end switch not making | Check pressure and boiler display. Reset once only. If it does not fire, call an engineer. |
What is happening: The thermostat or programmer is demanding heat, but the boiler is not starting, or it starts then stops.
Common causes: Low pressure, boiler fault code, failed receiver relay, wiring centre issues, zone valve end switch not making, or boiler lockout.
What to try: Check pressure first, then check if the boiler display shows a fault code. If the boiler is in lockout, reset once only. If it does not fire, call an engineer.
What is happening: The programmer and thermostat may be working, but heating or hot water does not flow correctly because a motorised valve is stuck, not travelling fully, or not proving via the end switch.
Common signs: Hot water only, heating only, both on when they should not be, or boiler running but radiators stay cold.
What to do: Zone valves and wiring centres require safe testing. If you suspect a stuck valve or wiring issue, book a diagnosis.
London properties often have older controls, extensions, and multi zone setups:
If your thermostat keeps going offline or the receiver keeps losing signal, it may be batteries, a receiver fault, or interference. We can diagnose the wiring and switching safely. If you also have cold radiators, restricted circulation can contribute to nuisance shutdowns, and a power flush may help. Learn more about power flushing.
Most heating controls, receivers and motorised valves are repairable and far cheaper than replacing a boiler. If your boiler is 10 to 15 years old and you are also facing major boiler faults, replacement may be more cost effective.
We give honest advice either way. Read more: Repair or replace? An engineer’s guide.
