Fast triage: Alpha model (E-Tec, InTec, Evoke, CD and similar), fault code, postcode, and whether other gas appliances work for ignition faults.

⚠️ Safety First

Smell gas? Do not touch anything. Do not use switches. Open windows, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Line: 0800 111 999.

Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone out immediately and call 999. Learn more about carbon monoxide safety.

No gas smell, no alarm? Your boiler may have locked out as a safety precaution. Try the quick checks below.

Quick Checks Before You Call Anyone

These take 60 seconds and solve a surprising number of lockouts:

  1. Check boiler pressure: Aim for 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold. More detail in our complete pressure guide.
  2. Note the fault code: Write it down before you reset.
  3. Check electrics: Boiler fused spur on, no tripped breakers.
  4. Check thermostat and timer: Confirm demand is on and set above room temperature.
  5. Freezing weather? The condensate pipe may be frozen (see below).
  6. Reset once only: Press reset once, wait 60 seconds. If it locks out again, stop and call an engineer.

Alpha Fault Codes

Note: Alpha fault codes vary by model. If your code is different, call us with the exact code and model and we will advise the safest next step.

Common Alpha fault codes and what to do
Code What It Means What To Do
E01 Ignition lockout / no flame detected (model dependent) Check gas supply and whether other gas appliances work. Check condensate pipe in freezing weather. If it returns, call an engineer.
E10 Low system pressure (model dependent) Top up pressure to 1.0 to 1.5 bar. If it drops again within days, call an engineer.
E20 Overheat protection triggered Do not keep resetting. Call an engineer to check circulation and safety controls.
E28 Circulation or flow issue (model dependent) Check radiators are warming evenly. If it returns, call an engineer.
E03 Fan or flue issue (model dependent) Call an engineer. Do not attempt DIY on flues.
Sensor fault Temperature or system sensor issue Reset once. If it returns, call an engineer for testing.

Ignition Lockout

What is happening: The boiler is trying to ignite but cannot establish a stable flame, so it locks out.

Common causes: Gas supply interruption, frozen condensate pipe, ignition components, airflow or flue issues, or a control fault that needs testing.

What to try: Check if your gas hob works. In freezing weather check the condensate pipe for ice. Reset once only. If the fault returns, call an engineer.

Low Pressure

If pressure is below 1 bar, top up to 1.0 to 1.5 bar. Step by step help: pressure guide.

How to Top Up Pressure (Alpha)

If you are not comfortable using the filling loop, stop and call a Gas Safe engineer.

Do not remove the boiler casing. If you cannot locate the filling loop easily, call an engineer.

  1. Locate the filling loop (usually underneath the boiler, a braided silver hose with one or two valves).
  2. Ensure the boiler is off and cool.
  3. Open the valves slowly, a quarter turn at a time.
  4. Watch the pressure rise to between 1.0 and 1.5 bar.
  5. Close both valves fully.
  6. Switch the boiler back on.

Do not exceed 2.0 bar. If you overfill, stop and call an engineer.

If you need to top up frequently, there is likely a leak or component issue. Book a diagnosis.

Frozen Condensate Pipe (Winter)

In freezing weather, a frozen condensate pipe is a common cause of ignition lockouts.

  1. Locate the condensate pipe (white or grey plastic pipe running to an outside drain).
  2. Pour warm water (not boiling) over the frozen section.
  3. Reset the boiler once thawed.

Full instructions: frozen condensate pipe guide.

Why These Faults Are Common in London Homes

  • Hard water: limescale and sludge reduce flow and can contribute to overheating.
  • Winter snaps: external condensate pipes freeze and cause lockouts.
  • Older systems: pressure drops are more common after radiator bleeding or where there are small leaks.

Alpha Models We Repair

  • E-Tec: combi and system
  • InTec: newer Alpha range
  • Evoke: domestic combi models
  • CD and older Alpha boilers: still common in London properties

🔧 Overheat Faults or Cold Radiators?

If radiators are cold at the bottom or you have noisy pipework, restricted circulation from sludge can contribute to overheating and repeat shut downs. A power flush clears debris and improves flow. Power flush guide.

Repair or Replace?

Alpha boilers typically last 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching that age and needs a major repair (PCB, fan, heat exchanger), replacement may be more cost effective.
