What Morco Actually Makes

Morco is a UK manufacturer of instantaneous gas water heaters – compact units that heat water on demand for taps and showers. They are not central heating boilers.

Morco water heaters are typically found in:

  • Caravans and motorhomes: compact LPG-powered units
  • Boats and narrowboats: marine-rated water heaters
  • Holiday homes and cabins: where mains gas isn’t available
  • Older London flats: properties without central heating that rely on separate water heating
  • Off-grid properties: running on LPG or bottled gas

Important distinction: A Morco water heater only provides hot water for taps and showers. It does not heat your home or run radiators. If you also have cold radiators, that’s a separate heating system problem.

Common Morco Water Heater Problems

Typical issues with instantaneous gas water heaters:

  • No hot water / won’t ignite: pilot light issues, gas supply problems, or ignition failure.
  • Water not hot enough: flow rate too high, gas pressure issues, or heat exchanger scaling.
  • Fluctuating temperature: common in older units – may indicate worn components.
  • Pilot light keeps going out: thermocouple failure or draught issues.
  • Yellow or sooty flame: combustion problem – stop using immediately and call an engineer.
  • Water leaking: heat exchanger or valve failure.

The Reality About Morco in London Homes

If you have a Morco water heater in a London property, it’s likely either:

  • An older installation from before the property had central heating
  • A secondary unit providing hot water to a specific area
  • Left over from a previous layout or conversion

Practical considerations:

  • Age: many Morco units in London properties are decades old and well past their intended lifespan.
  • Safety: older instantaneous water heaters lack modern safety features and may not meet current regulations.
  • Efficiency: modern combi boilers or unvented cylinders are significantly more efficient.
  • Parts: while Morco still operates, parts for older discontinued models can be difficult to source.

What Happens When You Call Us

Here’s our approach to Morco enquiries:

  1. We understand your setup: what type of Morco unit you have, how old it is, and what’s gone wrong.
  2. We assess your property: do you have central heating? What’s your current hot water arrangement?
  3. We give honest advice: whether repair makes sense or upgrading is the smarter investment.
  4. If upgrading is right: we explain your options and provide a clear, fixed-price quote.

Repair vs Upgrade: The Practical View

With older instantaneous water heaters, the economics usually favour upgrading.

Example repair scenario (illustration only): A call-out, diagnosis, and repair on an aging Morco could cost £250-400+ depending on the fault and parts availability.

  • Parts for older models may be discontinued or hard to source.
  • Another component could fail soon on aging equipment.
  • You’re still left with outdated technology and no warranty.

Compare that to upgrading: A modern combi boiler from £1,899 gives you hot water AND central heating, with a proper warranty and decades of reliable service ahead.

Landlords: Old Water Heaters Are a Liability

If you’re a landlord with an aging Morco or similar water heater in a rental property:

  • Safety risk: older gas appliances may not meet current safety standards.
  • Tenant complaints: unreliable hot water is one of the fastest ways to lose tenants.
  • Compliance: Gas Safe engineers may flag concerns about very old appliances during annual checks.
  • Emergency costs: reactive repairs on obsolete equipment are expensive and disruptive.
